BirGün reporter İsmail Arı has been arrested!

BirGün reporter İsmail Arı was taken into custody yesterday following a complaint by former RTÜK Chairman Ebubekir Şahin. Our reporter, Arı, who went to the Police Headquarters at the specified time to give a statement, was served with a detention order there. Having spent the night in police custody, Arı was taken to the courthouse at around 10.00. Arı’s statement to the public prosecutor concluded at 13.00. Our reporter Arı was brought before a magistrate on a charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information”, with a request for his detention. Arı was remanded in custody by the magistrate. Following the detention order, Arı made the following statement through his lawyers: “The magistrate didn’t even listen; he cut off the lawyers’ words. They are sending me back to prison once again for a crime that doesn’t even warrant imprisonment.”
